Check out the Winter Guard Association
of Southern California web site for information regarding events,
times, and scoring. Color Guard is….. Science: It is exact, specific and it demands precise execution. A designer’s drill is a chart; a graph which indicates x and y coordinates for constantly changing geometric shapes and forms in both time and space. Our equipment and props are always pushing the laws of physics with force and speed, action and reaction. All of this with an incredible control of time.
Mathematical: It is rhythmically and metrically based on the subdivision of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously. We have angles and degrees, both acute and obtuse, sequences, ranges, and hypotenuse.
A Language: It is a visual picture alive with message and meaning. We use interpretive phrases, sentences, and words with music which creates a most complete and universal language, to be recorded for others to see, feel and understand. Physical: It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, feet and legs; in addition to extraordinary control of the back, stomach and torso; all of which are called to respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the sight the eye sees. Color Guard revolves around endurance, ability, strength, and balance.
A Sport: A game we play with others, in which we share and we shine. Competing against ourselves to perform better each time.
A Performing Art: It is a show which can be entertaining and enlightening, with directing, acting, producing, managing and touring. Colors, fashion, flair, excitement, pizzazz, sophistication and subtlety. Always realizing the triad of performance; audience, performer, designer.
Educational: It allows a human being to learn how to take all of these things, some dry and technically boring, some difficult and challenging and use them to create emotion.
Winter Guard Winter Guard season begins when Band and Color Guard marching season ends. Practices generally start in January with competitions being held February through April. Unlike Marching season when the Color Guard performs with the band on a football field, Winter Guard performs in gymnasiums to recorded music.
The Color Guard Division is the foundation of Winter Guard International (WGI) Sport of the Arts. Founded in 1978, the Color Guard division became a new art form that captured the interest of countless young people across the country. The growth of this division has been unparalleled in the history of Pageantry.
Combining theater, dance and the joy of performance, with the cornerstone of equipment spinning and flying through the air, this new entity soon filled a large void in our schools as cutbacks in music and the arts left many students unfulfilled. Supportive parents aided in the funding of this growing beautiful activity. Students thrived and grew from the experience, and WGI continues today to lead the growth and fulfill the potential of this unique “art form”.
